Nam Kwan was born in Kyungbuk, South Korea in 1911. In 1937 he enrolled at the School of Fine Arts at Taiheiyo, Tokyo, and after graduating, returned to Korea. In Seoul he served as professor at Hongik University (a private school renowned for its Fine Arts Department) from 1947-1949. In 1954 he moved to Paris, and after a fifteen year stay in the city, again returned to Seoul. From 1969-1977, he was a member of the executive committee of the National Exhibition of the Fine Arts.

Over the course of his career Nam Kwan participated in group exhibitions at Tokyo’s National Exhibition of Fine Arts (1937-1944), in Paris at the Musee du Petit Palais (1955), the May Salon (1965-67, 1980), the Salon of New Realities (1965-67, 1980) and the Museum of Modern Art (1967). He was also part of exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon (1967), the Sao Paulo Biennial (1967), the Modern Art Museum in San Francisco, and in 1984 at FIAC (International Contemporary Art Fair) in Paris. In addition to many solo-exhibitions in Seoul and Paris, Nam Kwan’s work has been featured in Tokyo, Hamburg, Lausanne, Brussels and Luxembourg. In 1966 he won 1st prize at the Biennale of Menton.

Some of Nam Kwan’s more well-known paintings include Collapsed Ruins and Composition in Spain. His works can be found at the National Museum of Modern Art in Seoul, the Luxembourg State Art Museum, and the Paris Museum of Modern Art.
