Originally from Tifton, Georgia, he is the brother of Highwaymen Painters Harold (now deceased) and Sam Newton. A self-taught artist, he joined his brothers in Fort Pierce Florida, painting landscapes. His primary motives are swamps, palms, beaches and flame trees. From the 1960s on, he has been painting in an American realist/impressionist style.
The Newton Brothers have been inducted in the Florida Artists Hall of Fame along with twenty-three other Highwaymen artists. Lemuel Newton resides in Georgia.
