| Lloyd Kiva New died Friday, February 8, 2002 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. One of the founders of the Institute of American Indian Arts, New served as president from 1967-1978. He was later awarded president emeritus of the organization.
Throughout his career he was awarded numerous honors including New Mexico's Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts and the 2001 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts.
