Born in Crestwood, Kentucky, Mary Spencer Nay was a painter in modernist style. She studied at the Art Center Association School in Louisville from 1933 to 1940, and then attended the Art Students League and the Cincinnati Art Academy. From the University of Louisville, she earned a BA in 1941 and an MA in 1961.
She lived primarily in Louisville, where from 1940 to 1959, she was Director of the Art Center Association School and from 1959 taught at the University of Louisville.
