| | Born in Alameda, CA on Aug. 30, 1876, the son of Hugo W. Arthur Nahl. Virgil began art studies under his father and continued at UC Berkeley where he was quarterback on the varsity team. Athletically inclined, for several years he was amateur lightweight boxing champ of the West Coast. Although he painted portraits and landscapes, he rarely sold them, preferring instead to give them to friends. Best known as an illustrator, he was a staff artist for the San Francisco Examiner for 32 years. Nahl died in San Francisco on Feb. 9, 1930. Member: Olympic Club. Exh: Newspaper Artists, 1903.
