The following biography is based on information by Stephanie A Strass, curator and collector of paintings by women American artists.
A painter of portraits, interiors, and landscapes, Willie Betty Newman was a pioneering female artist from Tennessee where she was born on the Benjamin Rucker plantation in Murfreesboro. In those days, Willie was not an uncommon name for a woman, but later in life she rarely signed her paintings, instead using her initials, and this omission was more likely (showing 500 of 2714 characters). |
