Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Painter, illustrator. Born in San Francisco, CA on Feb. 16, 1881, Owens was drawing at an early age and began his art career as an office boy in his native city for the Examiner. At that newspaper were illustrators Harrison Fisher, Homer Davenport, and Jimmy Swinnerton who taught him the rudiments of illustration. He spent one year at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute. After the 1906 earthquake, he settled in Los Angeles as an employee of the Times. Maintaining a studio on Mt Washington, he painted desert scenes in his leisure. The book Nuestro Pueblo, Los Angeles City of Romance is amply illustrated with his sketches. Owens died in Los Angeles on March 3, 1958. In: Orange Co. (CA) Museum. SCA; LA Times, 3-4-1958 (obit).
