This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Baden, Austria in 1828. Ostner studied art at Heidelberg University. Due to political unrest accompanying the German revolution, in 1849 he decamped to Philadelphia. The following year he joined the Gold Rush to California and spent the next decade prospecting for gold in northern California. In Germany he had been an active member of the Turnverein (a liberal democratic society of gymnasts) and is credited with founding the first chapter of the Turnverein in San Francisco. In 1860 he continued his search for gold in Idaho, settling in Boise where he was a resident for his remaining years. With horses dominating his subject matter, his oeuvre includes watercolors, oils, wood carvings, and drawings. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1857.
