| Born in Baden, Austria in 1828. Ostner studied art at Heidelberg University. Due to political unrest accompanying the German revolution, in 1849 he decamped to Philadelphia. The following year he joined the Gold Rush to California and spent the next decade prospecting for gold in northern California. In Germany he had been an active member of the Turnverein (a liberal democratic society of gymnasts) and is credited with founding the first chapter of the Turnverein in San Francisco.
