| Born in Cumberland, MD on Oct. 19, 1818, a grandson of King George IV of England. A graduate of West Point, Ord was sent to California in 1847 as a lieutenant in the Mexican War. He remained in California except for service elsewhere. He made the first city map of Los Angeles (1849) and became commander of the army’s Department of the Pacific. (Fort Ord is named for him and Ord Barracks became the Presidio of Monterey.) When not involved in military matters, he painted in his leisure. He d (showing 500 of 728 characters). |
