Elliot Offner Named Woodson Art Museum's 2003 Master Wildlife Artist

WAUSAU, WISCONSIN - The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, Wausau, Wisconsin, has named American sculptor Elliot Offner as its 2003 Master Wildlife Artist. Offner will receive the award during the preview opening of "Birds in Art" on September 5, 2003.

As the Woodson's 25th Master Artist, Offner will be represented in "Birds in Art" by approximately 12 sculptures as well as preliminary watercolor studies. The artist will present a free public program at 10 a.m. on Saturday, September 6.

In making the announcement, Woodson director Kathy Kelsey Foley stated, "Elliot Offner is a sculptor of enormous talent who is recognized widely for his graceful and elegant birds and animals. Offner's sensitivity to the natural world is revealed through the poignant lyricism evident in his work."

Offner, who resides in Northampton, Massachusetts, has participated in eight previous "Birds in Art" exhibitions. He is represented in the Woodson Art Museum's permanent collection with "Posturing Crane," which was purchased from the 2002 exhibition.

Offner holds both a B.F.A. and M.F.A. from Yale University. He is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Humanities at Smith College, Northampton, where he is a highly regarded mentor to students. His commitment to nurturing the work of others extended to his recently completed tenure as president of the National Sculpture Society.

"Birds in Art," on view from September 6 - November 9, will feature more than 120 original paintings, sculptures, and graphics created by an international roster of artists. The exhibition's full-color catalogue will include an essay about Offner.
