| | George Oakley was part of a large family where talented painters appear in
generation after generation. He was the grandfather of Violet Oakley,
fresco painter, well known for the 17 panels she created for the
Pennsylvania State House. Since his painting couldn't bring in enough
money to support numerous dependents including a widowed
daughter-in-law and grandchildren as well as young sisters, Oakley
earned a living as a wool merchant. S.F.B.Morse seems to have been a
friend of his. Oakley was made an associate member of the National Academy of Arts
in 1826, the year after the Academy's founding. Oakley lived from 1793 to 1869.
