A native of Australia, he came to New York in 1921 to pursue an acting career. There he shared an attic apartment with Archibald Leach (Cary Grant). Orry-Kelly was trained as painter, and instead of receiving acting roles, he was soon hired to paint murals and draw illustrated subtitles as well as design costumes and sets for Broadway.
He went on to win several Academy Award for his movie costume design.
