This biography from the Archives of AskART:

A native of Australia, he came to San Francisco from Sydney on board SS "Sonoma" on May 30, 1922 and went on to New York to pursue an acting career.  There he shared an attic apartment with Archibald Leach (Cary Grant).  Orry-Kelly was trained as painter, and instead of receiving acting roles, he was soon hired to paint murals and draw illustrated subtitles as well as design costumes and sets for Broadway.

He went on to win several Academy Award for his movie costume design.
