| Born in Lake City, IA on May 21, 1886, the son of a minister. Olmsted spent his boyhood in New England. After obtaining degrees in chemistry from Middlebury (VT) College and as a Rhodes scholar at Oxford, he received his Ph.D from Harvard in 1920. He then was in the physiology department in Toronto until 1927 and then joined the teaching staff at UC Berkeley. As a self-taught painter, he began painting in the 1920s, primarily in watercolor.
