A scholarship from the Art Instruction School of Minneapolis, Minnesota led him to combine his abilities with wildlife interests, and became a noted sculptor of birds, usually carving them in burlwood.
He first exhibited paintings on Cape Cod, but a move to Maine where he made wooden signs led to bird carving. A final move to the San Juan Islands in Washington placed him in the "middle of a bird lover's paradise."
