This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following was submitted June 2004 by the artist:

Born in New York City and raised in Northern New Jersey, Mark Oberndorf showed an interest and ability in the visual arts at the age of ten. During the next few years, he was asked to illustrate school yearbooks and to paint murals for his elementary school exterior and for various public spaces around his hometown of Teaneck.

Throughout high school and college, he continued to study drawing and painting, participating in group exhibitions and completing commissions for family and friends. After graduating from Rider College with a B.S. degree in 1983, he ventured out to California to live and paint. It was at this time that he completed his first true plein-air painting and realized that this was what he wanted to do with his life.

After returning to New Jersey in 1986, he continued to paint in earnest, using the city streets of New York as his primary subject matter. It was also at this time that he started experimenting with a more photo-realistic style in the studio to complement his plein-air studies.

In 1992, he was awarded his first one-person exhibition at the Sola Gallery in Provincetown, MA. In 1996, he enrolled at the Art Students' League in New York City, studying with landscape painter, Peter Homitsky. He also studied in the private ateliers of Joseph Cellini and Italian Master Pino D'Angelico.

During this period, he continued to hone his observational skills in nature, painting from life in Central Park and around the landscape of New Jersey. He continued showing his work in various galleries around the tri-state area, learning and maturing as an artist to the present day. At this time, he is focusing in on documenting the ever-vanishing historical architecture in the New York City and New Jersey areas.
