This biography from the Archives of AskART:
An oil and pastel painter, Mary Close is known primarily for her figure and portrait subjects as well as uncluttered still lifes of recognizable objects.  In recent years she has focused on human relationships expressed through body language in tightly cropped images.

Her subjects are often elderly couples and relationships within families.  Many of the still lifes have special symbolism and are sometimes accompanied with explanatory words.  She often places her subjects front and center so that the objects dominate the entire image.

Some of her subjects are mundane and/or whimsical such as Oreo cookies, frog figurines, and dolls she finds in novelty stores.

Close has lived in Manhattan's upper East Side in a pristine studio apartment with her artwork neatly arranged, mirroring the composition of her still lifes.   Later she moved to Lakeville, Connecticut.

She received her BFA degree from the College of New Rochelle in New York and also studied at the Parson School of Design in New York City.  She has exhibited with the Pastel Society of America, Allied Artists of America and the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club.  She is a member of the Pastel Society of America.
