Biography from Taos Gallery:
Nnamdi Okonkwo was born on August 16, 1965 in Nigeria. Nnamdi left Nigeria in 1989 for Brigham Young University- Hawaii, primarily to play college basketball, but also to further his education. In 1993 Nnamdi graduated with a BFA in sculpture, and a few years latter an MFA in sculpture from BYU-Provo.

Artist Statement:
"I started drawing early in life, but did not take it seriously until I was about 17 years old. Before I left Nigeria I graduated with a Higher National Diploma in Painting from the Institute of Management and Technology in Enugu. It was in Hawaii that I discovered that sculpture offered me a better medium for the statement of deep personal feelings and ideas.

Formalistic concerns are of primary importance to me, and in the search for my ideal forms I am bound only by the dictates of my intuition and eyes. Thus my forms are stylized and simplified to a degree, enabling the forms to transcend mere literal description of the body, projecting them to a sphere where they exist devoid of physical limitation. I am drawn to the female figure for the exploration of these formalistic concerns and my ideas about life.

The logic and psychology of the female figure intrigues me, and I am also fascinated by the harmonious correspondences of the convex forms within the figure. The creation and contemplation of the forms fulfill an essential personal need. I experience in them the balance, beauty, serenity, and control which are elusive in real life. There is in them an order that is pleasant to me."
