Born in the Cuban town of Pinal del Río, Oliva studied at the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Havana. The artist, influenced
by Marc Chagall and the Cuban artists Eduardo Abela and Antonia Eiriz, began earning his living as a painter in 1970.
The permanent
contact with the people from his country and the inevitable human conflict that is generated in everyday life are the key sources of inspiration for his work.
