Peggy Olsen was born in New York, New York in 1937. She grew up in Southern California and earned her BA degree from Pomona College. She continued her education by attaining her MA degree from Columbia University in New York. At that point she began her career as a Social Worker in the San Francisco, California area.

Olsen moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1970. After retiring from her Social Work positions she attended art classes at the Monterey Peninsula College, and the Carmel Adult School. She studied with well known Peninsula artists Keith Lindberg and Reed Farrington.

Olsen was selected an artist member of the prestigious Carmel Art Association in 1986. She has served on their Board of Directors. She has also been a member of the Central Coast Art Association and the Artist's Equity.

In addition to exhibiting her works in group and solo exhibitions at the Carmel Art Association Gallery, she has exhibited at the Monterey Museum of Art, the Monterey County Fair, the California Heritage Gallery, The Gallery in Burlingame and the Art Forum in Pacific Grove. She has been an award-winning artist in many of the venues in which she has exhibited her work.

The following is from an associate of the artist:

Moving away from traditional images, Peggy Olsen sees landscape as a means of expressing new ways of seeing color. It is the color she is in love with and uses in ways intended to be visually exciting. Her recent bold paintings of eucalyptus trees and of California vistas epitomize this trend.

Olsen's versatility is expressed in a wide range of subject matter and technique. She paints in oils on heavyweight paper as well as on board and canvas. Her awareness of herself as an artist was slow in coming. Fearful of taking studio art classes in college, she became a social worker. She retired to raise her family and did not begin painting until age forty. It was a class in batik that awakened her love of art and led to drawing and painting classes. She loved painting in oils and discovered there was much more inside her ready to come out than she ever guessed.

In 1992, diagnosed with breast cancer with a big chance of recurrence, she feared her painting career of fifteen years was at an end. As she progressed through treatment, she found that "painting, instead of just being something I wanted to do, now became a great privilege and a source of strength. To painting, to create, is a way to thoroughly enjoy living. Luckily, I have remained healthy and each year since 1992, I have done about a hundred paintings. A privilege indeed!"

Her large triptych of California landscape graces the lobby of the new Breast Care Center of the Community Hospital on Cass Street in Monterey.

Olsen has been a member of Carmel Art Association since 1986.
