This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Peter Paul Ochs was a sculptor and painter who was born in Tilst, East Prussia (north east of Poland, since 1945 it is in a part of Russia called Kaliningrad and has been renamed Sovetsk).  He emigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1952.  He moved to Summerland (B.C.) in 1959, returning to Vancouver in 1964.  He also lived in Greece from 1982 to 1989, returning to Vancouver where he lived the rest of his life and died.

His painting and drawing mediums are oil, watercolour and ink.  His sculpture mediums are wood (oak, cherry, apricot, cedar), iron, cast stone, bronze and concrete.   His painting subjects are abstracts, landscapes and harbour scenes.  His sculpture subjects are primarily abstracts.  His painting styles are geometric abstraction, representational and fauvism.  His sculptures, with few exceptions, are geometric abstracts.

He studied at the Vancouver School of Art (1954) under painter and sculptor James Alexander Sterling MacDonald (1921 -), in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière (1956) under sculptor Ossip Zadkine (see AskART), and in Hamburg at the State Academy (1957) under sculptor Hans Martin Ruwoldt (1891 – 1969).

Part of a Canada Council Grant he received in 1956 was used to study Indian carving methods, complete restoration projects of Indian works of art, and to make a photographic study of Tsimshian and Haida wood carving masterworks.  This experience appears to have influenced his own wood carving, much of which seems informed by West Coast Indian totems.

He was a member of the Northwest Institute of Sculpture (1958), the B.C. Society of Artists (1965), the Federation of Canadian Artists (1966), the Sculptors Society of Canada (before 1974) and was a founding member of  the Sculptors Society of B.C (1974).

In addition to showing with the above organizations he has exhibited at the Seattle Art Museum (1959), the National Gallery of Canada (1964), at the first outdoor exhibition of B.C. sculpture (University of B.C.,Vancouver/1956), and at the  B.C. Centennial Show (Burnaby/1958).  He has also exhibited in Calgary (Alberta), Edmonton (Alberta), Winnipeg (Manitoba), Toronto, (Ontario), St.Catharines (Ontario), and Quebec City.

His works are in many private collections and in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), the Burnaby Art Gallery (B.C.) and the Surrey Art Centre (B.C.).  There is also a large outdoor concrete sculpture at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, B.C.

Several newspaper articles, dating from as early as 1959, discuss his work. He is also listed in A Dictionary of Canadian Artists (1974), by Colin S. MacDonald, and in Jaques Cattell Press, Who's Who in American Art 15th Edition" (1982).
