This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Exhibiting in New York in 1915 desert landscapes as well as cityscapes and 'south of the border' scenes of Mexico, Rozella Butler put the show together at the Erlich Gallery from three years of travel by horseback in Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico with special emphasis on Arizona.  Her only companion was her guide.

At the exhibit, her landscapes were not well received.  One reviewer wrote that she had "produced a great many desert pictures with a strong, heavily loaded, masculine brush, the majority of her work and probably the better part was painted in the cities where life is expresed more obviously with a great deal more action."

Doris Dawdy, Artists of the American West, Volume II

Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
A painter born in Davenport, Iowa on March 24, 1876, Rozellia Butler studied in Antwerp, Paris, and Munich.  She worked in New York City in 1917 and then painted in New Mexico and Arizona.

In the Southwest she traveled about on horseback to paint the various Native American tribes.

After moving to Los Angeles in 1925, she produced landscapes of the High Sierra and the desert at Palm Springs. She died in Los Angeles on July 31, 1948.

Ehrich Gallery (NYC), 1915 (solo).
