| Based in California, Ruth Ortlieb was a painter who traveled extensively in Asia, Canada, Mexico, and Europe. She was born in Riverside, California and raised in San Diego, where she married William Ortlieb in 1916. She began exhibiting in the late 1920s and graduated from San Diego State College in 1931. She then was active in the San Diego Art Guild and taught art in the San Diego schools. In 1942, she earned an MA Degree from Claremont College where she studied with Millard Sheets.
