Biography from Crocker Art Museum Store:
Portrait painter.  Born in New Haven, CT on June 9, 1808.  Osgood was raised in Boston and studied painting there.  He married poetess Frances S. Locke in 1835 and then spent four years in Europe furthering his art education.  Returning to the U.S., he settled in NYC where he was made an Associate of the National Academy of Design.

Osgood made three trips to California.  He first came in spring of 1849 and spent nearly a year in which time he "made his pile" at gold mining and then spent five months in San Francisco painting portraits.  He came again in 1852-53 and in 1870 he stopped in San Francisco on his way to Japan.  He is believed to have lived in California for several years before his death in 1885.
