This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Carlisle, PA on Aug. 15, 1810. Officer began his career in Philadelphia in 1834 and was a pupil of Thomas Sully. He worked in NYC and exhibited at the NAD during 1846-49. After traveling to Mexico City and Australia, he settled in San Francisco in 1855. Officer had a studio in the Vance Bldg, worked as a colorist for photographer George B. Johnson, and was active in the local art scene. His miniatures and portraits received high praise from the local press. His short time in San Francisco was not a successful one. An alcoholic and poverty stricken, he died of consumption on Dec. 8, 1859 and was buried at public expense in Lone Mountain Cemetery. Exh: Mechanics' Inst. (SF), 1857, 1858 (bronze medal). In: CHS.
