This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Born August 25, 1848 in upstate New York, Zeffie Osborn was the
daughter of Enoch and Margaret (Cargo) Luman. She met and married
Alanson Osborn, Jr. in Mohawk, New York, where he worked in a local
drug store. The couple soon returned to Eaton Rapids, Michigan,
his home town, where they lived in the same home the remainder of their
lives. Regarded by her peers as a very talented and
artistically inclined lady, she began studying painting in the early
1880's under Mrs. Mary G. DeHart (dates inknown) of Lansing,
Michigan. She took further lessons in landscape and china
painting privately in Chicago and also from Mrs. Lovisa O. Card-Catlin
(1846-1925) in Erie, Pennsylvania.
Besides teaching art for a
brief time at the Owosso Oakside Seminary - for which she was paid the
hadsome sum of $16 per week - she also taught a number of the local
ladies, including Addie (Hartson) Birney (1872-1965), who went on to
become quite well known for their artwork and china painting. A
noted socialite, Zeffie Osborn was voted the favorite hostess of the
city in 1894. Her numerous accomplishments included piano,
elocution, embroidery, acting and photography as well as art. In
poor health the last three years of her life, she died within six
months of her husband on December 27, 1913. Noted for her many
landscapes in oil and water color, she signed her work either Z. or
Z.M. Osborn. In her will, a number of landscapes of scenes around Eaton
Rapids were left to the Public Library where they are currently on
display.
