Artist's Statement (from a catalog for a retrospective at the Butler)

After having spent more than fifty years painting in watercolor, I'm still fascinated and frustrated by this illusive medium. I start each painting with a sense of adventure, knowing no matter how I strive, I will more or less be controlled by the subject I've chosen. As a result, each painting is a sort of renewal for me. I'm continually surprised at the finished product. Sometimes disappointed, sometimes pleased, but always eager to get on to the next one.

Watercolor is my Lorelei. I remain constant.
