The following information is from Julie Sasse, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Tucson Museum of Art.

Barbara Penn uses literary and poetic themes, integral to her paintings, combined media constructions, and installations that incite issues of domesticity, gender, and the progression of womens roles over time.
Exhibitions include solo showings at the University of Texas, El Paso; the Scottsdale Center for the Arts, and the Tucson Museum of Art.

In 1997, Penn was part of a group exhibition at t he Mead Museum in Amherst, Massachusetts, entitled "Language as Object: Emily Dickinson and Contemporary Visual Art, which included works by Joseph Cornell, Judy Chicago, Roni Horn, Lesley Dill and others. She has created and exhibited over eighteen installation works over the last eight years.
