| From England, Charles Parsons came to America at age nine and grew up
in New York City where he became a noted lithographer, having
apprenticed to George Endicott in 1833. From 1854 to 1862, he
produced most of Endicatt's marine lithographs and also thirty for
Currier and Ives. In 1863, he became the head art director for Harper's and held that position until 1889, when he retired.
It is written that "at Harper's",
he assembled one of the most talented teams of illustrators in
publishing history", including Winslow Homer, Edwin Austin Abbey,
Charles Reinhart, and Howard Pyle.
He also continued to do work for Currier and Ives. He was also an early champion of watercolor.

| | Born in Hampshire, England on May 8, 1821. Parsons immigrated to NYC with his family in 1830. At age 12 he was an apprentice of lithographer George Endicott. After 1861 he did many lithographs for Currier & Ives and headed Harper's art department until 1889. While in San Francisco in 1878, he sketched a view of the city while visiting with old friends Britton & Rey. Parsons died at his home in Brooklyn, NY on Nov. 9, 1910.
