Artist Statements:

My painting is always about passion. My passion for the subject, my passion for the composition, my passion for the tactile sensation of painting. I want viewers to see what I see ... the concept of each painting. Whether it's the beauty of a pose or the beauty of the body, I want them to see that concept. Sometimes the concept is about color, sometimes the composition, or sometimes there's a situation that the viewer has to decipher.

I want my paintings to be more than average representations of life. I want the viewer to react and see a humanness and the subtle romance of life: to see that exquisite human quality, that jubilant, timeless combination of strength and frailty, that beauty and grace in all of us and our environment.

I strive for honesty in my paintings, in my pursuit of creating beauty. For me, grace and movement are the most important aspects of this pursuit.

I started painting seriously when I was thirteen years old. I had a wonderful teacher named Virginia Hawkins. She was very patient with me - firm, and knowing, but patient. I studied with her for four years, and for some of that time, every day. She took me to museums. She'd explain and talk about every kind of art. She didn't have prejudices against different idioms, such as modern art or primitive art. She had a passion and a joy in life. That rubbed off on me.

Now, I relate everything I do in my life to my art. Walking and eating, I think of painting. How can I incorporate this landscape, or this food into my work? As an artist, I will never reach a pinnacle; I am constantly searching and growing, constantly moving.

I grind my own pigments and stretch my own canvas in order to become closer to the actual materials of painting. I care about what I do. I paint subjects only from life. I paint from my response to the subject, from my heart. I paint what I love.

I first studied painting seriously while attending the Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York, where I received the Sherman Prize for Excellence in Art upon graduation. I received my bachelor's degree from Skidmore College and master's degree from the College of Saint Rose. I also studied at the Art Students League with David A. Leffel and Terrence Coyle.
