Claude Picher (b.1927 / d.1988)

Claude Picher was born in Québec city on May 30, 1927.

From 1945 to 1946, Picher studied at the National School of Fine Arts of Quebec under Jean-Paul Lemieux. Soon after, he studied from 1947 to 1948, at the New School of Social Research in New York from 1947.  Picher continued his education after he received a scholarship from the French Government, study at the Louvre as well as at the National Superior School of Fine Arts from 1948 to 1949.

Following his education, in 1950 through 1958, Picher became Exhibition Director at the Musée du Québec.  For the National Gallery of Canada for the Eastern Region he was a representative  from 1958 to1962.  Picher, continued to sty active, as an assistant director at the Musée du Québec from 1963 through 1964.  That same year Picher began to paint full time.

In 1973, Picher he represented Canada at the 5th Biennal of Canadian painting at the Commonwealth Institute, in London, England.  He then exhibited in the same city with the Elisabeth T. Greenshield Collection.  With the OJ Firestone Collection, other group exhibitions were held in London, England, Paris, Madrid, and Düsseldorf Germany.

Exposition provinciale de Québec  - 1st prize, drawing and painting (1941-1946)
Montréal Museum of Fine arts  - Salon du printemps, (1956)
Salvador Dali Fondation of the Bryn Mawr University in Pensylvania  -  grant (1958)
 In 1960, he became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art

After a long disease, Claude Picher died in 1998.
