Noted as one of the America's foremost draughtsmen and writer of Southern regionalism, David Strother was likely the best-known graphic artist in the United States at the time of the Civil War.

He was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, and grew up in a family whose ancestors had settled in King George County in the mid 17th century. They were primarily farmers, and many of them served in the Revolutionary War. Physically frail, he was protected from rough play by his parents and encoura (showing 500 of 6391 characters).
