Born in Leroy, NY on June 8, 1840.  Penniman entered the Cooper Institute (NYC) in 1858 where she became proficient at oil painting.  She then taught drawing and painting in New York at Watertown Institute, Cooperstown Academy, and Maplewood Seminary at Pittsfield.  In 1871 she moved to Chicago and opened a studio.  From 1873 until 1878 she lived in Rome, Italy where she furthered her art studies.  Returning to NYC, she maintained a studio there until 1885.  She then moved to San Francisco where she painted portraits and landscapes for six years.  In 1891 she returned to New York in failing health and died in Albany on Nov. 23, 1891.
