| Born in Brest, France on March 2, 1806. Pârís was a French naval officer and member of the Laplace expedition which visited the California coast in 1839. While there, he painted a view of the Carmel Mission. After returning to France, he retired with the rank of admiral and was director of the Musée de la Marine where many of his paintings are held. He died in Paris on April 8, 1893.
