Born in Le Sueur, MN on Oct. 19, 1869. Plowman was a pupil of Douglas Volk, Eric Pape, and attended the Royal College of Art at South Kensington in England. He was active in Berkeley, CA as an architect and etcher from 1905-13. After 1915 he was a lived in Newark, NJ and Cambridge, MA; he died in the latter on March 26, 1932. Member: NAC; Calif. PM Society; Calif. Society of Etchers. Exh: PPIE, 1915 (bronze medal). In: Society of Calif. Pioneers; Boston Museum; NY Public Library; Library of Congress; British Museum; NMAA; MM; CSL.

George Taylor Plowman
1869-1932

George Taylor Plowman — illustrator, etcher , and writer — was born on October 19, 1869 in Le Sueur, MN and died on March 26, 1932 in Cambridge, MA. In 1910 his address was Berkeley, CA and, in 1929, it was 9 1/2 Madison Street in Cambridge, MA.

Plowman studied under Douglas Stephen Arnold Volk (1856-1935) in Minneapolis, MN; Eric L. Pape (1870-1938) in Boston, 1910. He also studied in Paris and, under R. Short, at the Royal College of Art in London from 1911 to 1913. Trained as an architect, Plowman turned to etching at the age of 42 and, through his work, immortalized the covered bridges of New England. He authored Etchings and other Graphic Arts, 1914 and Manual of Etching, 1924 (Dodd Mead and Company).Plowman won a Bronze Medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco.

His memberships include the Chicago Society of Etchers; the New York Society of Etchers; the Boston Society of Etchers; the Salmagundi Club in New York City; the Brooklyn Society of Etchers; the California Society of Etchers; the California Printmakers; the Society of American Etchers; and a Fellow at the Royal Society of the Arts.

Plowman's work is represented in the collections of the Whistler House Museum of Art in Lowell, MA; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; the Frederick R. Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, MN; the Luxembourg Museum; the British Museum; the South Kensington Museum; the Southport Museum in England; the New York Public Library; the Library of Congress in Washington, DC; the Sacramento State Museum in CA; the Newark Public Library in NJ; the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City; the Albany Art Museum in NY; and the National Museum in Washington, DC.
