This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Gregorio Prestopino was born in New York City's Little Italy and attended the National Academy of Design at the age of 14. There he was influenced by the Ashcan painters and their depiction of urban life.

In 1934, Prestopino summered at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, N.H.
and became a director in 1954, which influenced his art. Prestopino's work ranged from the "citizens of Harlem and ending with imaginary creatures inhabiting the landscapes of New Hampshire."

Throughout his career he taught painting at the Brooklyn Museum School (1946-51); New School of Social Research (1950-67); and was an artist-in-residence at Michigan State University (1960).
