This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Hank Pitcher walks to the beach from his studio in Isla Vista, California. He has spent his career painting the beach up and down the Santa Barbara Coastline. In fact, he grew up in the same neighborhood and today the beach where he played as a child is part of the campus of the University of California Santa Barbara. Pitcher joined the University faculty in 1971 and teaches in the department of creative studies.

Pitcher's abstracted seascapes hang in private collections and in the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Collection. His beach scenes capture the culture of Southern California and pay homage to the beauty of the landscape.

Biography from Sullivan Goss - An American Gallery (Artists I-Q):
HANK PITCHER (1949– )

Hank Pitcher has been painting professionally since 1970. He is best known as a painter of California beach culture. He is a member of the Oak Group and a professor of art at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and a native of southern California.

"Simplicity and directness often veil the hard-won refinements and duplicities of art, and Hank Pitcher’s [works]…are small miracles of painterly equilibrium. Portraying the southern California coast…Pitcher’s paintings evoke a strong spirit of place. These harmonies in saturated blues and greens, broken with startling shots of brilliant local color, are classical in their compositional clarity, but…also aspire to synthesize impressionism’s scrutiny of outward appearances with Pitcher’s emotional immersion in country and seaside. Keepsakes of the fleeting appearance of a particular time, they endure as meditative archetypes in time." —Anne Ayres, Director of Exhibitions, Otis Parsons College of Art and Design
