Biography from Butler Institute of American Art:
(from a Garrecick's Gallery exhibit catalog Harry Packman : New Paintings of May
1955)

As director of Garelick's Gallery, I take professional pride in presenting for the first time a one-man show of 25 paintings by Harry Packman, Detroit artist.  Harry Packman, in the opinion of artists, critics, and genuine lovers of Art, is one our truly promising and talented painters in Detroit.

Harry Packman was born in St. Louis,MO. December 1913. A t the age of 14 he went to work as a copy boy on one of our Detroit newspapers -one year later, he was transferred to the Art department, where he is still actively employed.  He attended Detroit High Schools and studied drawing and painting with Sarkis Sarkisian at the Society of Arts and Crafts.

He certainly is no new-comer to the professional art world. He has exhibited in annual shows for Michigan Artists at the Art Institute since 1943.  In 1947 and 1948, he was in the Pepsi-Cola Paintings of the Year shows.  He became the recipient of the $500 first prize for paintings at the Butler Art Institute, Youngstown, Ohio, in 1949.  He also participated in exhibitions at the Detroit Artist Market, Wayne County Shows, State Fair, Kirk-in-the-Hills, and several group shows of regulars at the Garelick's Gallery, including "19 Detroit Artists" at the A.C.A. Gallery in New York, May 1954.

It is time now for Harry Packman to make his debut in a one-man show of his latest and most mature work, and I can say with genuine sincerity that the people of Detroit will not be disappointed in Packman's art.

Robert Garelick, director.
