This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Irving Penn is known for highly realistic photography, with many of his works being celebrity photographs.  Subjects included Georgia O'Keeffe, Igor Stravinsky and Marlene Dietrich.  He studied with Alexey Brodovitch at the Philadelphia Museum School and graduated in 1938.

Harper's Bazaar published drawings by Penn, who also painted. "As his career in photography blossomed, he became known for post World War II feminine chic and glamour photography. Penn has worked for many years doing fashion photography for Vogue magazine. He was among the first photographers to pose subjects against a simple grey or white backdrop and used this simplicity more effectively than other photographers."

In 1950, Penn married his favorite model, Lisa Fonssagrives, and she died in 1992.

Exhibition venues for his photographs include a 2002 solo show at the Metropolitant Museum of Art, a 2005 solo exhibit at the National Gallery of Art, and a 2008 exhibit of portraits at the Morgan Library in New York City.  A 2009 solo exhibition is planned at the J. Paul Getty Museum.
