Jacopo Pontormo was born in 1494 near Empoli, and called Jacopo Carrucci da Pontormo, after his birthplace. He was a pupil of Andrea del Sarto and his work was greatly influenced by Michelangelo. He worked both as a portraitist and in fresco. He painted many portraits of the Medici family. Angelo Bronzino was his pupil and assistant. He died in 1556.
