----------------------------------------------------------------------Born in Black River Falls, Wisconsin, James Phillips settled in Austin, Texas and became an art historian and painter He earned a BS degree from the University of Wisconsin at Madison and then attended the Art Students League in New York, and in Paris, the Academie de Grande Chaumier and the Ecole de Louvre. He earned MA and MFA degrees at the University of Texas and began teaching there in 1968.
His style is Magic Realism, and mediums are egg tempera and oil. Phillips is also a research historian with emphasis on Roman and late antique art emphasizing architecture.
