Jan Preisler was a Czech painter and university professor.

Jan Preisler was born in the family working in the iron moulders in Dvur King  He attended a municipal school in Charles Hut at Popovic. From childhood he was a loner, he enjoyed observing nature and the elements. The town school in Beroun piqued their private plots and drawings. Headmaster Kozel, a professor at Brno Technical Rehorovský and MP Neumann, art lovers, called Preislerová parents through letters, to give the boy to study in Prague, and guarantee that it will be financially supported. The proposal was also supported by Emil Kratochvil, director of ironworks in the King's court, where he worked Preisleruv father.

So in 1887 , when he was 15, he went to Prague to study at the School of Applied Arts , which was led by Francis Zenisek , later in this school he taught himself. After graduation he shared with Charles Spillar Lesser studio in the building unions. During his studies, made contact with the Federation Manes, who was still only a student association. From the beginning, he participated in the journalistic activity of the league, in 1894 drew the cover to the album from a variety of leaves and two years later, his drawing breeze and the wind was used to cover the first issue of the journal Free directions, which he edited for several years.

In 1902 traveled with a friend Antonin Hudecek after Italy . On the way back in Vienna he met with August Rodin.

After a legendary exhibition of Edvard Munch in Prague in 1905  he helped organize and also designed the poster, visited Paris in 1906 where he became acquainted with the work of Paul Gauguin .

In 1903 he became teacher of drawing the external act to the College of Applied Arts in Prague and from 1913 to 1918 he worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts . One of the pupils was Joseph Sima .

In March 1909 he visited the studio of French sculptor Emile-Antoine Bourdelle .

In 1914 he married Bozena Pallas artisan family from Prague. They had two children: son John and daughter, Bozena. In April of 1918 he died in Prague on pneumonia . At his own request was buried in the family tomb in the cemetery in the King's court-Pocaply near Beroun.
