| JoAnn Peralta, painter and illustrator, attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California for four years. There she met her future husband, artist Morgan Weistling.
Following art school, Peralta began a career as an illustrator. Her paintings were reproduced on book covers, video boxes and magazines. Then she was faced with the decision to put her career on hold as she found herself expecting their first child, Brittany. When Brittany entered school, Peralta first thought of going back to illustration. However, the world of commercial art had changed drastically with the advent of computer art, so she looked for an outlet that would embrace traditional hand-painted artwork. She turned to the profession of painting for galleries.
She also set forth to reinvent herself as an artist and as a person as well. After painting various portraits for her own growth, from Elvis to Union Civil War soldiers, she, inspired by her own hard-working family, turned to the theme of working heroes of Hispanic descent. This decision gave her momentum and confidence in her painting abilities. “There is pride in labor, despite the job, be it white collar or blue collar labor. I am grateful and I want the world to know it. I find beauty in the face of the laborer, regardless of that persons heritage or economic status and I want to explore more of the laborer and more of my roots. I'd like to bring you, the viewer, along.” |
