This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Called by THE ARTIST'S MAGAZINE, "one of today's top landscape artists," JOEL POPADICS is primarily noted for his traditional style of landscape painting. He was born in Paterson in 1961 and raised in Wayne, New Jersey. He holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from the School of Visual Arts, New York City and has been a professional artist since 1983.

Joel Popadics was introduced to watercolor by his high school art teacher Ruth Neilseen. An accomplished watercolorist herself, Neilseen inspired Popadics with the paintings she often displayed in her classroom. Another influence was James McMullan, a prominent New York City illustrator. Upon graduating from the School of Visual Arts he worked as McMullan's assistant from 1983-1987. Popadics attributes everything he learned about watercolor from this working experience. Popadics also studied landscape and portrait with Arthur F. Maynard and John Phillip Osborne at the Ridgewood Art Institute in Ridgewood, New Jersey where the educational program traces its origins back to Frank Vincent DuMond (1865-1951) at the Art Students League in New York City. DuMond trained Arthur Maynard (1921-1991), who in turn educated John Philip Osborne (1951- ) who then taught Popadics in the 1980s. Popadics now teaches both adults and children at the RAI and organizes travel workshops during the summer months.

Noted for his use of green Popadics favors New England as the subject of his transparent watercolors. He paints plein air at locations in Rochester, Vermont; Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod and Gloucester, Mass.; Camden, Maine; and Ireland. Most of the year he paints on location throughout his home state of New Jersey.

Mr. Popadics has had over ten one-man shows, including a December 1998 exhibition at the Bergen Museum of Art and Science in Paramus, NJ. His work has appeared in juried exhibitions of the National Academy of Design, American Watercolor Society, Salmagundi Club and other prominent organizations in New York City. Among his many honors are four Best-in-Show awards and fifteen major national awards including The Florence Lonsford Award for a Traditional or Impressionistic Landscape from the Salmagundi Club, NYC, and The Grumbacher Gold Medal from the California Watercolor Association. He is an elected member of four art organizations and was a featured artist in the July 1998, June 2000, March 2003 and June 2004 issues of THE ARTIST'S MAGAZINE. He was also featured in the July 2004 issue of AMERICAN ARTIST MAGAZINE.

Mr. Popadics is first Vice President of the New Jersey Watercolor Society. He is also a faculty member, education chairman and trustee of the Ridgewood Art Institute. He is represented in only the finest galleries across the Northeast and his watercolors are in exclusive private and public collections.

Joel Popadics resides in Wayne, NJ with his wife, Patricia and their two children.

Watercolorist Joel Popadics paints landscape, townscape and marine scenes around his home in New Jersey, New England and Europe.

The artist has exhibited with the American Watercolor Society, California Watercolor Association, the Louisiana Watercolor Association and the New Jersey Watercolor Society of which he currently serves as vice president (2004).

Popadics teaches at the Ridgewood Art Institute, Ridgewood Community School and in summer workshops.
