This biography from the Archives of AskART:
John C. Pitcher, approaches his art with confidence and originality.  For over twenty-five years he has expressed his passion for the natural world through beautifully detailed paintings.  Pitcher's success in portraying the world's natural beauty lies in his experience as a naturalist. By keeping field journals, which contain notes and drawings of plants and habitat, and making field sketches and taking reference photos, he assembles the details for the final work, experimenting with composition and calling back to life the original inspiration behind the paintings.

Nick Hammond, a British author/editor/publisher specializing in wildlife and nature, rates John C. Pitcher as "among the best American wildlife artists." Robert J. Koenke, owner/editor of Wildlife Art magazine, the nation's foremost publication on wildlife art, says, "I'd compare his (Pitcher's) work with that of any of the great artists in the world." John C. Pitcher's ability to portray the intrinsic beauty of nature is the rare gift of a true artist/naturalist. Raised in Portage, Michigan, John enjoyed family camping trips and developed a keen interest in anything wild, especially birds of prey and snakes! Following an Army tour in Vietnam he moved north and became one of Alaska's leading wildlife artist. Twelve years later he moved to Washington to continue his focus on art and nature and eventually migrated to Southern Vermont where he and his wife, Sue Westin have a gallery.

Pitcher's paintings are exhibited nationally and are in the permanent collections of the Anchorage Museum of History and Art,AK; University of Alaska Museum, AK; The Bennington Center For The Arts, VT; The Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum, WI; and the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, NJ.

He is an honored member of the Society of Animal Artists and was awarded "Best of Wildlife" in the Arts For The Parks National Competition.  John and Sue as a husband and wife team, jointly exhibited "Kindred Spirits", a showing of 73 works, at the Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum, NJ from Sept. - Dec., 2000. Some of his published works include paintings created for the National Geographic Society, Alaska Northwest Publishing Co., Alaska Geographic, World Book Encyclopedia and limited editions by Artique Ltd., Mill Pond Press, Applejack Limited Editions and The Hamilton Collection.

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Known as a bird and small mammal artist, John Pitcher prefers using ink "so he can't erase" and can capture his subjects as they are at the moment he first sees them.

For over 25 years, he has been a field sketch artist and has an intricate logging system of using three sketchbooks and also writing about what he sees in paint.  He has served as illustrator for the World Book Encyclopedia, A Guide to the Birds of Alaska.
