|  John Douglas Patrick (1863-1937)
The son of Scottish immigrants, he was born in Hopewell, Pennsylvania in 1863; he died in Kansas City, Missouri, in January, 1937. A painter, he specialized in landscapes, portraits, still life. He was also a teacher.
He moved with his family from Pennsylvania to a farm near Lenexa in 1878. Patrick attended the St. Louis School of Art for four years then left in 1885 to study at the Academié Julian in Paris. His talent was recognized by the faculty and he had paintings accepted for the Paris Salon, the prestigious annual exhibition, in 1886 and 1887.
The following year, he painted his masterpiece, Brutality, a monumental canvas that graphically depicts a Parisian worker beating his horse. Painted in response to the common Parisian social problem of cruelty to horses, Brutality was shown to great acclaim at the Salon of 1888 and established Patrick's career. It now hangs in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City.
Patrick returned to the U.S. in 1889 and taught for 3 years at the St. Louis School of Art. He moved to Kansas City in 1903 and joined the faculty at the Kansas City Art Institute where he remained the primary painting teacher for 32 years. He was a prominent leader in the Kansas City artistic community in the early part of the 20th century. | Source:
