This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| John C. Podrebarac grew up in Kansas City, Kansas in a Croatian settlement on "Strawberry Hill" a high promontory overlooking the confluence of the Missouri and Kansas Rivers. He attended the Kansas City Art Institute in 1957 and began working in a style of painting frequently labeled "American Modern Impressionism." John, however, gave this style his own imprimatur.
His works are characterized by wide short brush strokes conveying a strong sense of detail with what seems a minimal effort; i.e. giving the appearance of just a few quick passes of the brush.
His subjects are primarily landscapes, female nudes, head portraits of Native Americans (in Taos, N.M.) and, in the example of Kansas City's Union Station, interior architectural space. His paintings vary in size from 6" X 4" to roughly 14" x 18". There may be larger canvases but, of the dozens I have seen, all are within the stated range.
In the late 60s, after a sojourn for a few seasons in Taos, he and his wife moved to Summerland, California (near Santa Barbara) where he gained a wide following among celebrities in the film industry. During that time he continued to sell work in the Kansas City area through the late artist/dealer Kenneth D. Gilbert, a restorer, sculptor and, for many years, owner of "The Barn Gallery" in Prairie Village, Kansas (later in Overland Park, KS.). In the early 70s he created a mural in ceramic "Panorama of the Americas" for the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City.
Podrebarac left Santa Barbara in the 70s for the Seattle/Kirkland area in Washington. He is an uncle to Charles Podrebarac, an artist of note whose drawings regularly appear in The Kansas City Star.
John C. Podrebarac passed away on June 8th, 2006 at the Lakeview Nursing Home in Kirkland, Washington, after a lingering illness.
