Karl Plath was a student of the Academy of Fine Arts. He was also an alumnus of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Karl Plath visited the native countries of the tropical birds to make his as accurate as possible. He maintained his own aviary with more than 400 species in Chicago and was curator of birds at Chicago's famous Brookfield Zoo. He was a highly regarded ornithologist who obtained exotic animals for the zoo including Tasmanian devils and Wombats.
He exhibited at Knoedlers Galleries along with the Cliff Dwellers and Chicago's Woman Club. He did illustration of birds for magazines and new papers in addition to calendars for the Gerlach Barklow Calendar company.
