| Expressionist painter Katherine Porter was born in 1941 in Iowa. She studied from 1959 to 1961 at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, receiving a B.A. degree in 1963 from Boston University. She was awarded an honorary Doctorate in 1984 from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. The National Endowment for the Arts gave her a grant in 1972.
Her exhibitions include biennials in 1976 and 1981 at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; 1980 at the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts; 1981, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire; 1985, Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts; and 1987 at the Sidney Janis Gallery, New York City.
Porter's paintings are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art and Guggenheim Museum in New York City; High Museum, Atlanta, Georgia; and Harvard University's Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
