L.B. Porter – (Lawrence Benjamin)

L. B. Porter is a third generation El Pasoan (Texas). His father, Carter C. Porter, a Methodist Minister, was preaching in Friona, Texas when L. B. was born on March 3, 1929. His father and mother purchased a farm between Fabens and Clint, Texas, near El Paso in 1932, and a town home in El Paso in 1935 to be near better schools.

A native of El Paso, Texas, L.B. Porter was a child prodigy and was tutored in art at the age of twelve.  He attended Coldwell Elementary and graduated from Austin High School in El Paso.

After graduating from High School, he attended Texas College of Mines before joining the Air Force. Returning to civilian life, he attended New Mexico State, where he received a Bachelor of Science, a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts in Fine Art. He also holds an honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities from the London Institute of Applied Sciences in England awarded in 1972.

L. B. has been a resident of New Mexico since 1953, and a full-time professional artist since 1965, after having taught public school art for three years and worked five years with Civil Service on the General’s Staff at the White Sands Missile Range, as a Visual Information Specialist.

Porter is a noted painter, educator, writer, illustrator, lecturer, muralist, photographer and art juror. An ultra-realist, he works with acrylics, and his subject matter is primarily the land and people of the Southwest. In 1964, he pioneered a new concept by introducing nudes as subjects in contemporary Southwest scenes and landscapes, which won for him significant awards and recognition. His unique style was developed through his use of strong contrast between light and shadow.  In the last 15 years he has enjoyed another new style he calls “New Wave”, which mixes realism with creative decorations.

He was elected to the Knickerbockers Artists of America in 1995.  In 1997 he was voted into the El Paso Artists’ Hall of Fame.

Work by J.B. Porter is accepted by collectors and museums throughout the United States, Canada, South America, England and Europe. His paintings are included in the collections of nationally known political, financial and professional figures.
