This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Matthew Placzek's detailed, colored sculptures are carved from blocks of Jelutong, soft Malaysian wood, and their realism gives them the appearance of being taxidermy mounts. He is a native of Nebraska where he was born in Columbus and raised in Grand Island. He studied and carved wild fowl along the Platte River. Collectors include former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
For the past 18 years Matthew Placzek's fascination with sculptural composition has grown and evolved into an art form that is uniquely his own. From his studio in Omaha, Placzek is comfortable sculpting in both wood and bronze medium. "I will be forever fascinated by the third dimension. Creating sculptural forms with excellent design, line and tension intrigue me the most."

With attention to the finest detail, his goal is to breathe life into blocks of wood and clay, painstakingly recreat works of nature and the human form. His largest public work is displayed in Omaha: Two monumental compositions reaching as much as 25 feet high are located at the Landmark Center in downtown Omaha.

Many of his works are included in corporate collections including Peter Kiewit Sons, Omaha; Guiness Brewing, London; Takao Building Development, Tokyo; BMW, Germany; Level 3 Communications, Denver and Dayton Hudson, Minneapolis. Some of the private collectors are Suzanne and Walter Scott, Warren Buffett and Wayne Newton.

His works are shown at the U.S. Embassy in Prague and are included in the presidential collections of Austria, The Republic of China and former President Ronald Reagan.

Written and submitted March 2004 by the artist.
